We get the question all the time, “do you ever have to evict people?”
The simple answer is yes... but for us, it is never a simple outcome or conclusion to reach.
We truly desire healthy communities with flourishing residents. Stable, connected and long-term residents are a crucial component to flourishing places.
Our communities are often in areas where generational poverty has a tight grasp. We understand that life happens, people get sick, cars break down, jobs have to change and relationships end. We always seek to first be understanding as life unfolds with our residents.
We try to work out a path that keeps our residents in their homes and allows them ample opportunities to navigate forward in a healthy way.
The second thing we do as life unfolds with one of our residents is that we set clear boundaries for the next steps. This includes things like actions, timeframes, payment plans and surprisingly equally important- communication expectations*. We can work within some of the actions, timeframe and payment plan things as long as there are open lines of proactive communication.
The thing about paths and roadways is that there must be boundaries and guardrails. These are meant to protect all parties and the surrounding environment. Sometimes, we reach the point with residents where boundaries have been crossed and we must part ways. Our professional and caring team handles these situations with sensitivity. We believe that flourishing should be the goal not just within our communities, but also in our residents' lives beyond their time with us. We strive to move forward while preserving as much dignity as possible and providing resources where we can.
Evictions are always sad, and it's healthy to view them as such. If we ever start seeing them as normal or simply a transaction, we've lost sight of our residents' humanity. People and relationships are complex, and we're committed to navigating these complexities with humility. We won't always get it right, but as a team, we'll always try our best.
*We only work with professional, licensed property managers who ensure all local laws and fair housing provisions are followed throughout our rental process.
